About the National Sports Federation

The Australian Federal Police National Sports Federation Inc. (AFPNSF) is a privately run entity for serving and retired personnel of the Australian Federal Police.

History

The Federation was formed by serving AFP members in 1988.

The AFPNSF inititated and designed the AFP National Games. It attempts to hold the Games annually but owing to exigencies of duty this is not always possible. The Games have has numerous perpetual trophies, two of which are the Minister of Justice’s Shield and the Commissioner’s Shield, both for athletic achievement.

Constitution

The Federation operates under a written constitution, which sets out the duties and responsibilities of the elected executive and committee members. It is an incorporated body within the ACT and its operating charter reflects the guidelines and directives of the AFP.

Its aims are to promote sport and the health and fitness of members as well as to encourage and regulate sport and sporting competitions on behalf of the AFP members.

The Federation further provides assistance to members and teams engaged in internal, domestic and international competitions between police, emergency services and like organisations such as;

  • Australia and New Zealand Police and Emergency Services Games,
  • World Police and Fire Games,
  • International Law Enforcement Games.

Police members, their families and friends involved in sport and the community, share a common bond of friendship and competition. Involvement with the AFPNSF will help to maintain appropriate levels of health, fitness and camaraderie as well as have the potential to improve the quality of a participant's life.

Physical fitness is an important ingredient in the makeup of Police personnel. Personal well being and, the relief of stress and adds to corporate esprit-de-corps.

Funding

To date the AFP NSF has not sought external or internal sponsorship, preferring instead to remain self-funded through financial members’ contributions via an annual subscription of $52.00 which is, in the majority of cases, deducted from the pay of the member at $2.00 per fortnight. The AFPNSF is regularly audited by the NSF accountants. In order to claim assistance from the NSF, you must be a financial member.

In the past, the AFPNSF has, when possible, provided grants to members who compete at recognised domestic and international law enforcement sporting events. Grants are up to $100 for domestic events and $300 for international events.

Where funding has allowed, the Federation has also provided assistance with the provision of sporting and event uniforms.

Participation in events

The AFPNSF has a permanent member on the Executive of the Australia and New Zealand Police and Emergency Services Games, to which a capitation fee based on 10 per cent of the actual membership of the whole Australian Federal Police is paid. This capitation fee benefits all serving and retired members of the Australian Federal Police, but is drawn from the funds of financial members.

Regular attendance by AFP members at Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland Police Games has occurred continually over the past 10 years. In numerous instances, AFP members have participated as sport coordinators and assisted with the running of these games.

More recently, the AFP has participated in high level emergency service sporting events including the respected AFP versus NSW Police rugby union game, which on particular occasions forms the curtain raiser to a Super 12 match. Similarly the AFP has provided players in the inaugural AFL Australian Rules Emergency Services game, which was played at the SCG as a lead up event to an AFL premiership game. Inter agency soccer, netball, hockey, volleyball, basketball and touch football games regularly take place throughout most of the AFP regional offices.

Golf, fishing and shooting clubs have consistently conducted events under the auspices of the AFP and the AFPNSF is looking to bring these groups under its banner in the future.
