The Australian Federal Police Pipes and Drums

The AFP Pipes and Drums (AFPPD) draws its volunteer membership from the Canberra City Pipes and Drums (CCPD), a band formed in 1991 to provide a non-competition setting for players wishing to maintain their skills and to become the premier ceremonial band in the Canberra region.

In 1993 the CCPD was first appointed as the honorary pipe and drum band to the AFP. The appointment was formalised in 2002 with the signing of a service agreement between the Commonwealth of Australia and the CCPD.

The AFPPD is central to many AFP ceremonial events, from the provision of a solo piper for funerals and investitures, through to the full band for such occasions as the National Police Remembrance Day Service.

In recognition of that appointment, the CCPD adopted the wearing of black and white hackles, black and white 'dicing' on glengarries and the display of the AFP logo and chequered dicing on all drums. A number of serving and retired police officers and other AFP employees are amongst the playing ranks.

The Long March to the 2009 Edinburgh Military Tattoo has begun!

After years of work refining their music, the volunteers of the AFPPD have been invited to perform at the 2009 Edinburgh Military Tattoo. This followed a particularly well received appearance at Moscow’s inaugural military music pageant Kremlin Zoria, which provided a showcase for the band’s talent.

The band members covered their personal expenses to Kremlin Zoria and will be doing the same for Edinburgh, so keep coming back to this page to follow the band’s preparation and for information on how you might be able to help the band fulfil this highland dream.
