AFP Operations and Service Medals

These awards will establish equity in the recognition of long service and endeavours in significant operations within the AFP. The new awards will also compliment the existing ACT Community Policing Medal. The AFP service medals are as follows:

  • Australian Federal Police Operations Medal;
  • Australian Federal Police Service Medal;
  • ACT Community Policing Medal; and
  • Australian Protective Service Medal for Service.

AFP Operations MedalAwarded to all eligible AFP employees involved in prescribed operations or activity deemed by the Commissioner, on the advice of the executive management team, to be significant. Clasps will be awarded for prescribed operations as and when required.

Recipients of the AFP Operations Medal will receive a full size medal, a miniature and a ribbon (for every day use by uniform members). As with other internal awards, the AFP Operations Medal is to be worn on the right hand side.

AFP Service MedalAbout the award

The AFPSM is one of two new medals to recognise the service of Australian Federal Police employees. The other medal is the Australian Protective Service Medal (APSM). 

Medal Ribbon

The ribbon has a central blue stripe representing the traditional colour of police and is flanked by two white stripes symbolising integrity, each 2 millimetres wide, these are flanked on either side by a 3 millimetre wide dark blue stripe representing the Australian Capital Territory, home of the AFP Headquarters.

The outer stripes of yellow represent wattle (Australia’s national floral emblem) and the outer stripes of dark blue represent one of the Australian heraldic colours.

Medal Design

The AFPSM is a circular nickel-bronze medal, 35 millimetres in diameter, ensigned with the Crown of St Edward.

The obverse bears the Platypus, the AFP fauna symbol, facing to the right and backed by the Roman Numeral X, representing 10 years service, with the Federation Star between the upper arms of the numeral.

The Medal has an outer-circular inscription: “Australian Federal Police – For Service”.

The reverse bears a wreath of wattle and will be inscribed with the recipient’s name.

How is it awarded?

The AFPSM is awarded to eligible AFP employees who have completed:

  • A cumulative total of 10 years qualifying service with the AFP from 19 October 1979; or
  • A cumulative total of 10 years qualifying service with both the AFP and the APS, if the employee was serving on 01 July 2004
Application Requirements

Current serving employees are not required to apply, Recognition and Ceremonial will commence the process to award the medal. Former employees are required to apply for the medal.

ACT Community Policing MedalThe ACT Community Policing Medal is awarded to ACT Policing members after ten (10) years cumulative and diligent service.

Recipients of the ACT Community Policing Medal will receive a full size medal, a miniature and a ribbon (for every day use by uniform members). As with other internal awards, the ACT Community Policing Medal is to be worn on the right hand side.

Eligible employees will be announced through the AFP Gazette on a regular basis. Additional service will be recognised by way of a clasp denoting the number of years the individual has been with the ACT Policing.

The awarding of the ACT Community Policing Medal does not preclude ACT Policing members from receiving the AFP Service Medal after completing the eligibility requirements;

Australian Protective Service MedalAbout the award

The APSM is one of two new medals to recognise the service of former Australian Protective Service (APS) employees. The other medal is the Australian Federal Police Service Medal (AFPSM).

Medal Ribbon

The Medal is suspended from a ribbon 32 millimetres wide.The ribbon has a central blue stripe 2 millimetres wide representing the traditional colour of police and is flanked by two white stripes symbolising integrity, blue/grey stripes symbolising the uncertainty in outcome and three gold and blue stripes representing Australia’s heraldic colours.

Medal Design

The APSM is a circular nickel-bronze medal, 35 millimetres in diameter, ensigned with the Crown of St Edward. The APSM is awarded to former APS employees who have given a cumulative total of 10 years qualifying service with the APS from 20 October 1984 to 30 June 2004.

Application Requirements

No entitlement exists for current serving employees. Former employees are required to apply for the medal.

Additional Clasps

Comprehensive details of these awards are in the process of being completed this document. Additional clasps for Long Service medals are as follows:

  • Australian Federal Police Service Medal – Awarded after ten (10) years of prescribed service. An additional Clasp will be awarded after a further ten (10) years service and every subsequent five (5) years thereafter;
  • ACT Community Policing Medal – Awarded after ten (10) years of prescribed service. An additional Clasp will be awarded for every subsequent ten (10) years service;
  • Australian Protective Service Medal – Awarded after ten (10) years of prescribed service. An additional Clasp will be awarded after ten (10) years service and every subsequent five (5) years thereafter; and
  • AFP Operations Medal - Awarded to all AFP/APS employees involved prescribed operations or activity deemed by the executive management team as being significant, eg: Operation Alliance. Additional Clasps will be awarded for subsequent eligible involvement in prescribed operations.

Eligibility

The ultimate discretion rests with the Commissioner in the case of all awards.
