AFP Order of Precedence
Due to the number of honours and awards (both internal and others) now available to Australian Federal Police (AFP) employees, other than those under the Australian Honours System, the following Order of Precedence has been established. Honours and Awards listed in this section are worn on the right hand breast. Honours and Awards listed below are worn in order of precedence from the centre of the body out, i.e. the highest award is worn closest to the centre of the chest with lesser awards following outwards (that is ‘right to left as you look at the honours and awards).
This Order of Precedence is varied from time to time at the discretion of the Commissioner of the AFP.
AFP Internal Honours and Awards are highlighted in bold.
- Commissioner’s Medal for Excellence
- Commissioner’s Medal for Innovation
- Royal Humane Society (Stanhope Gold) Medal
- ACT Community Protection Medal
- Royal Life Saving Medal
- Royal Humane Society (Silver) Medal
- Commissioner’s Commendation for Bravery
- Royal Human Society (Bronze) Medal
- Other Police Valour & Bravery Medals (dependant on that service’s order of precedence and date of inception*)
- Commissioner’s Commendation for Conspicuous Conduct
- Commissioner’s Commendation for Excellence in Overseas Service
- Commissioner’s Commendation for Hazardous Overseas Service
- Other Police Meritorious Service Medals (dependant on that service’s order of precedence and date of inception*)
- Australian Federal Police Operations Medal
- ACT Emergency Medal
- Other Police & Government Departmental Operational Service Medals (dependant on that service’s order of precedence and date of inception*)
- Australian Federal Police Service Medal
- ACT Community Policing Medal
- Australian Protective Service Medal
- Other Police Long Service Medals (dependant on that service’s order of precedence and date of inception [1])
- Other medals as identified and requested to be worn by the recipient [2]
Honours and Awards listed above will be worn in parallel line with those conferred under the Australian Honours System (that are worn on the left hand side). Group citations will be worn centrally (10mm) above other honours & awards.
Notes
[1] Permission to wear medals and awards conferred by other Police services rests solely with the Commissioner. Permission is to be requested by way of a report to the Commissioner, through the Team Leader, Recognition & Ceremonial Team and details will be entered onto the employee’s records (i.e. SAP) Honours & Awards Team (Recognition) which is part of the Recognition & Ceremonial Team.
[2] Permission to wear medals other than those listed rests solely with the Commissioner. Permission is to be requested by way of a report to the Commissioner, through the Team Leader, Recognition & Ceremonial Team and details will be entered onto the employee’s records (i.e. SAP) Honours & Awards Team (Recognition) which is part of the Recognition & Ceremonial Team.
