Chief Operating Officer
Mr Andrew Wood
Andrew joined the AFP in November 2007 as the Chief Operating Officer. His portfolio includes the enabling functions of the Chief Financial Officer, Chief Information Officer, National Manager Human Resources, Manager Internal Audit and Manager Business Analysis.
He has particular interests in strengthening organisational values and how they are demonstrated in the workplace, and in building the infrastructure and capacity of the AFP, so that it can continue to successfully respond to the government’s expectations following the growth in AFP’s size and the increase in complexity of its business in recent years.
Prior to joining the AFP, Andrew was the Group Manager Corporate Support in the Department of Families, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs. In that role he was responsible for Legal Services, Human Resources, Property and Security, Communications and Media, Ministerial and Parliamentary Support, and Corporate Strategy. He was also responsible for a range of infrastructure establishment and support services for the Australian Government’s intervention into the Northern Territory to address child abuse.
Previously Andrew worked in Senior Executive Service roles in the Department of Defence (as Director General Rotary Wing Aviation, responsible for the acquisition and through-life sustainment of the Army and Navy helicopter capabilities, including support to domestic and overseas deployments), and the Department of Health and Aged Care (Internal Audit, Parliamentary and Public Affairs, and People Strategy). Andrew also had a number of non-Senior Executive roles in the Departments of Health and Social Security, and in Comcare Australia, since first joining the Australian Public Service in 1982.
Andrew was born in Maleny Queensland, grew up in Canberra, and is married with two school-age sons.
