Assistant Commissioner Peter Drennan 
Assistant Commissioner Drennan is a career police officer having commenced as a uniform constable in Canberra in 1979. During his career he has worked across the community, national and international spheres of the AFP. These roles have predominantly been in investigation areas of the AFP. His current role is the National Manager, Counter Terrorism. This is an operational portfolio with primary responsibility for the AFP’s investigations concerning terrorism and terrorist financing.
Key leadership and management roles undertaken by Assistant Commissioner Drennan include Assistant Commissioner in charge of the AFP’s Sydney Office and all activities in New South Wales, Assistant Commissioner responsible for the AFP’s Border and International portfolio and prior to his current role the Assistant Commissioner responsible for Economic and Special Operations.
A key highlight of Peter’s career was his role as the AFP’s Senior Liaison Officer based in Hong Kong. During this time he was directly responsible for AFP’s operations, criminal intelligence and relationships in Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Japan and Korea. He was also responsible for overall coordination of the AFP’s activities throughout East Asia from the People’s Republic of China to Indonesia. During this period the AFP experienced unprecedented success in narcotic seizures and disruption of transnational criminal activity.
Throughout his career Assistant Commissioner Drennan has continued his personal development by undertaking studies at a postgraduate level in human resources management, police executive leadership programs with the Australian Institute of Police Management and external programs with the Australian Graduate School of Management and the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
Outside of work Peter combines his two passions in life: photography and mountain trekking. He has trekked and climbed mountains in the Himalayas in Nepal, the Andes in Peru, New Zealand, Canada, Alaska and Tanzania.
