Andrew Colvin joined the Australian Federal Police (AFP) in 1990 and has spent the majority of his career within the AFP Sydney office where he progressed through the ranks of the AFP investigating a range of organised crime offences including narcotic importations, organised fraud, money laundering, politically motivated crime and terrorist financing.

In 2002, Andrew was promoted to the rank of Superintendent and was tasked to establish the AFP response to the growing threat of terrorism. Shortly after this appointment, the AFP assumed a major role in partnership with the Indonesian National Police in response to the terrorist attacks in Bali and Andrew managed the national and international investigation for the AFP.

Andrew was awarded the Order of Australia medal for his contribution to this investigation and subsequently went on to establish the framework for what is now the Counter-Terrorism portfolio of the AFP, where he was promoted to the rank of Commander in 2004.

In July 2005, Andrew commenced as Chief of Staff, managing many of the political, media, legal and professional standard aspects of the AFP as well as the Commissioner's office. Andrew was promoted to Assistant Commissioner in 2006 and in 2008 was tasked by the AFP Commissioner to work with retired Chief Justice of the NSW Supreme Court Sir Laurence Street on a review of the AFP’s interaction with its national security partners.

In March 2008, Andrew commenced as the National Manager High Tech Crime Operations. High Tech Crime Operations (HTCO) is a new business unit of the AFP focussed on delivering leading edge technology enabled policing, as well as combating new technology enabled crime.
