Police urge public to ensure home security during holiday period – 16 December 2008

As we quickly approach the festive season and many Canberrans begin to plan their holidays away, police would urge home owners to also start thinking about the security of their house and/or property during the holiday period.

If you are planning to leave your home vacant for a period of time during the holidays, seek some support from neighbours or friends in “looking out” for and protecting your home.

For instance, let your neighbours know when you are leaving and for how long. Attention to security details is often important, such as the installation of timers to switch house lights on and off at different times during the night, and movement-sensitive lights around entranceways and driveways.

Remember to cancel any deliveries (newspaper, etc) before leaving home, and ask neighbours or friends to collect your mail and bring in the rubbish bins, as these are common “signals” to potential burglars that a property may be unoccupied.

Just as your home needs someone to look out for it over the school holidays, so too do our schools.

While police will be patrolling at random times of the night and day, we are also appealing to the public to assist. If you see anti-social or suspicious behaviour around a school, or hear anything unusual, report it to police by calling 131-444.
