Crime Stoppers web site launch – 10 June 2008
Last Friday, ACT Policing helped launch the Crime Stoppers ACT website, expanding the capacity for the Canberra community to notify police of suspicious activity.
In its 12th year, Crime Stoppers and ACT Policing have forged a valuable partnership through the vigilance of the general public in reporting suspicious behaviour in their neighbourhood through the Crime Stoppers hotline 1800 333 000. Now these reports can be made electronically on-line.
Canberra is one of Australia's most 'connected' cities – the make-up of our workforce means the majority of our technology-savvy population spend hours on-line. For many of them, the most direct form of communication is via a computer keyboard. For this reason, the addition of the interactive website to our highly-successful hotline is viewed as an extension of the mediums and processes which many of our community are already comfortable with. Importantly with on-line reporting, people can still remain anonymous.
One of the other great benefits the new Crime Stoppers website offers is that persons who provide us with information – whether anonymously or not – can log on at a later time and see the status of an investigation which they have provided information for. This provides tangible evidence to the community that every bit of information we receive potentially helps in the fight against crime.
