Vehicle immobiliser scheme; phase two - 16 July 2008

The recent launch of phase two of the ACT Government’s expanded immobiliser scheme has reinforced the government and ACT Policing’s commitment to curbing motor vehicle theft. A car is stolen in Australia every six minutes resulting in disruption and distress for vehicle owners. Offenders may potentially use vehicles to joyride or commit other offences.

If your car is manufactured in the 1980s then it is five times more likely to be stolen than those manufactured post-2000. However, research shows that the installation of an engine immobiliser into any vehicle can greatly reduce the risk of drivers becoming a victim of this predominately opportunistic type of crime. That is why an immobiliser still remains one of the most effective ways to secure your vehicle. Under the scheme, any ACT resident can apply for the $100 rebate to help subsidise approximately half the costs associated with installing an immobiliser into their vehicles.

The voucher can be obtained by calling Canberra Connect on 132281 who in turn will forward a voucher to the owner to take to an accredited auto electrician. It is a great opportunity, particularly for those who have older vehicles without an immobiliser, to minimise the risk of car theft and assist ACT Policing and the ACT Government with another positive crime prevention initiative.
