Career Development Program – 17 June 2008
ACT Policing plays a significant role in helping new members of the multicultural community to integrate into the Canberra community. Through the PCYC, ACT Policing helps provide a ‘level playing field’ for members of the multicultural community through regular sporting activities including soccer and basketball.
Now ACT Policing is reinforcing its commitment to the multicultural community with the help of the ACT Government and the Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT) through a career development program aimed at assisting participants in gaining skills and qualifications for employment. The project is designed particularly for persons who have entered Australia for humanitarian reasons.
Up to 20 students at a time will be offered classes in business, hospitality, tourism and cooking with a view to gaining employment with local businesses. In the planning phase, ACT Policing’s Multicultural Liaison Officer met with community organisations including Companion House and the Sudanese Youth Association to identify suitable participants.
On June 23, the first group of participants will begin the program with a focus on not only broadening their skill base but ensuring the acculturation process includes a commitment to study and a respect for police and society.
It is another example of ACT Policing’s growing commitment to the local community to enforce, educate and encourage.
