Snow Safe 2008 targets speeding and fatigue

ACT Policing and NSW Police have launched Snow Safe 2008, targeting speeding and driver fatigue to and from the NSW snowfields. This launch coincides with the upcoming Queen’s Birthday long weekend and subsequent double demerit period.

Officers from both jurisdictions gathered today at the ACT/NSW border near Hume to launch the campaign.

ACT Policing Traffic Operations Superintendent Mark Colbran said this weekend marks the beginning of an increased police presence on the roads to and from the NSW snowfields.

“These operations will continue right through the ski season until October, focusing on speeding and other high-risk behaviours on ACT and NSW roads,” Supt Colbran said.

“Police cannot stress enough the importance of not driving when tired and taking adequate rest breaks every two hours.

“Motorists need to be aware that given the seasonal drop in temperature, road conditions can change suddenly and quite dramatically, potentially bringing hazards such as high winds, snow, ice or fog. We urge motorists to be prepared for sudden changes and tailor their driving accordingly.”

Double demerits for all speeding and selected seatbelt offences begin the first moment tomorrow (Friday, June 6) and finish at midnight Monday (June 9).
