Man charged over fantasy import
Wednesday, 30 July 2008
This is a joint Media Release between the AFP and Customs
A 36-year-old Willoughby man has been charged with the importation of more than 3000 litres of Gammabutyrolactone (GBL), known as the date rape drug ‘fantasy’, following an Australian Federal Police (AFP) and Customs operation.
The man was arrested on 29 July 2008 and will face Sydney Central Local Court today.
On 2 July, Customs officers in Sydney intercepted a shipment of GBL which did not have the required permit to import. The consignment was described as metal cleaning solvent and valued at more than $11,000.
On 16 July the AFP conducted a search warrant at the man’s Chatswood business where large amounts of GBL and other chemicals were located and seized.
The effects of ‘fantasy’ vary according to the purity and the amount taken but include euphoria, dizziness, relaxation and loss of inhibition. Side effects also include vomiting, coma, disorientation and impairment of movement and speech.
The man was charged with importing and possessing a commercial quantity of border controlled drugs contrary to the Criminal Code Act 1995.
The maximum penalty for this offence is a fine of $825,000 and/or life imprisonment.
