Media statement - Clarke Inquiry

Friday, 01 August 2008

Since the announcement of the Clarke Inquiry into the matter of Dr Haneef, my preferred position has always been to refrain quite properly from making any comment prior to the publication of Mr Clarke's findings. This position is in deference to the conduct and independence of the Inquiry which I have personally supported, and with which the AFP continues to fully cooperate.

Regrettably, I feel compelled to respond briefly to persistent, erroneous and mischievous media reporting of AFP actions relating to the Inquiry. This type of reporting misinforms the public and can threaten the integrity of a proper constituted inquiry. Specifically, in relation to debate about the publication of the AFP submission to the Clarke Inquiry, I urge any interested party to read the media release published by Mr Clarke which comprehensively explains why such a publication is problematic (http://www.haneefcaseinquiry.gov.au).

For the record, the AFP has provided full details of all its holdings, including all classified material, to the Clarke Inquiry.

As has been my position from the outset of the Clarke Inquiry, I do not intend to publicly comment on any substantive matters which are before the Inquiry.
