Virtual Global Taskforce
The Virtual Global Taskforce (VGT) is made up of law enforcement agencies from around the world who work together to fight online child abuse.
Specifically, the VGT comprises the Australian Federal Police, the Australian High Tech Crime Centre, the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre in the UK, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the US Department of Homeland Security, Interpol and the Italian National Police.
The aims of the VGT are:
- to make the Internet a safer place;
- to identify, locate and help children at risk; and
- to hold perpetrators appropriately to account.
The VGT delivers low-cost, high impact initiatives that prevent and deter paedophiles from exploiting children online.
The VGT website (www.virtualglobaltaskforce.com) acts as a gateway to a wide range of information on how to use the internet safely, and links to a range of agencies that can provide additional advice and support. The VGT website also includes an online reporting facility for suspicious online behaviour.
The VGT seeks to actively engage industry in battling online child exploitation. In Australia, several industry bodies are openly supporting the initiative including Microsoft, the Australian Communications and Media Authority, NetAlert, Visa, BigPond, FujiFilm, Sophos, the Australian Institute of Family Studies, and the Department of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts.
Corporate industry partners in the UK include Microsoft and MSN, AOL, British Telecom, Vodafone, Lycos and the Football Association.
The synergy of law enforcement, government, industry and the community is vital in keeping children safe online.
