Aviation information
Aviation provides law enforcement services to Australia's Designated Airports in order to assist the Australian aviation industry in mitigating the threat posed by terrorism and criminal activity. Intelligence led law enforcement strategies, focused on preventing, deterring and responding to acts of terrorism, general duties policing and the investigation of serious and organised crime in the aviation stream will contribute to a safe and secure environment for domestic and international regular passenger transport within Australia.
The principal responsibility for the AFP in Aviation is to create a safer and more secure environment at Designated Airports and within the aviation security community.
This will be achieved through:
- the Airport Unified Policing Model, which will prevent, investigate and present for prosecution, crimes which impact on the Commonwealth’s interests;
- a highly visible deterrence capability which will respond to and contain security incidents at airports; and
- a discreet capability able to take direct action in response to an in-flight terrorist incident.
- The Aviation Portfolio will create a secure aviation environment through:
- Airport Police Commanders (APC);
- A full time Airport Uniform Policing (AUP) presence of State/Territory Police and Australian Federal Police (AFP) officers wearing AFP uniforms under AFP command;
- Joint Airport Investigation Teams (JAIT) at Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney airports;
- A Joint Airport Intelligence Group (JAIG);
- The Counter Terrorist First Response (CTFR) capability, including Bomb Appraisal Officers (BAOs), Firearms Explosive Detection Canine (FED) teams and the Regional Rapid Deployment Teams (RRDTs);
- The Air Security Officer (ASO) Program; and
- Protective Security Liaison Officers (PSLOs).
The success of Aviation is dependent upon the strength of the relationships between the AFP, State and Territory police services and the aviation community. Aviation will be characterised by a high level of inter-agency cooperation.
