Intelligence information

The AFP Intelligence Process is project-driven and directed towards delivering intelligence outputs that address identified gaps in corporate knowledge. The Many projects are multi-jurisdictional in nature and draw on resources in Head Office and the relevant Local Offices.

A significant portion of Intelligence work incorporates value-adding to existing incoming information by conducting long term investigations.

AFP Intelligence must also conduct projects that seek to fill gaps in corporate knowledge about the criminal environment and identify targets from this strategic understanding.

Intelligence Officers will generally be a mix of sworn and unsworn officers. Some IO's may be career intelligence officers whilst others may bring contemporary operational experience to the team whilst using their deployment to enhance their skills kit and widen their career path choices within the AFP.

The IO engages in the collection, collation, analysis and dissemination of intelligence to support corporate intelligence objectives, including managing specific intelligence cases/ projects. IO's are responsible to ensure a seamless flow of intelligence to/from key stakeholders and clients, and supporting the production of strategic, operational and tactical intelligence in accordance with the AFP Intelligence Collection Requirements.

Intelligence Support Officers are generally unsworn members. These positions provide a base entry level opportunity for persons looking to pursue a career in law-enforcement intelligence. The ISO provides assistance to the other team members in the collection and generation of intelligence to support corporate intelligence objectives. They conduct basic inquiries as well as collecting, collating and analysing intelligence under the supervision of other team members. ISO's are encouraged to undertaken appropriate internal and/or external training courses to equip them to advance into the IO or Analysts streams.

Intelligence Officers in the Human Source Management Team (HSMT) will be predominantly sworn members with extensive and varied operational experience who have appropriate training in the identification, recruitment and management of informants (eg. AFP Field Intelligence Training Course). There may be some unsworn IOs who have particular skill sets (eg; language, culture, other agency experience, etc.) to add greater dimension to the team's capabilities. IO's in the HSMT may require assumed identities and will work closely with counterparts in other law-enforcement and correctional agencies. They rely upon a wide range of 'warm' and 'cold' targeting techniques to recruit human sources in areas of AFP interest. They provide a mentoring and coaching role in assisting other operational and intelligence members recruit and manage human sources.
