International Deployment Group (IDG) Information
The International Deployment Group (IDG) was established in February 2004 to manage the deployment of Australian police overseas.
The IDG enables the AFP to contribute to regional stability and security on behalf of the Government of Australia by contributing to offshore law enforcement initiatives.
AFP assistance delivered offshore depends on the needs and requests of the host nation and range from stability and peacekeeping to capacity building missions.
The IDG currently has 350 members serving in overseas missions to Cyprus, Solomon Islands, Sudan, Timor-Leste, Nauru, Tonga, Vanuatu, Cambodia & Afghanistan.
The IDG comprises staff drawn from the AFP and from Australian State and Territory jurisdictions. State and Territory police personnel are appointed as special members of the AFP for the duration of their IDG service.
Roles and opportunities within the IDG
The scope of work available at the IDG is very broad and a variety of positions exist for sworn and unsworn members in operational and support roles.
Opportunities exist in overseas peacekeeping, capacity building and stability missions working side by side with local police in an effort to restore law and order and enhance local policing capacity.
More recently the Australian Government’s response to child abuse in Northern Territory indigenous communities has opened up the opportunity for members to deploy to the Northern Territory, providing community policing activities in these communities.
The AFP Operational Response Group (ORG) falls under the function of the IDG. The 200-strong ORG group - made up of Tactical Response Teams and Stability Response Teams, provides tactical policing capabilities and a high-readiness response to incidents of civil disorder. The primary focus of this group is international offshore operations.
In addition, the IDG employs over 250 Australian-based (A-Base) personnel that provide support to the various IDG missions. The A-Base administrative office is located at the Wanggirrali Ngurrumbai Centre, Majura, Canberra.
A-based support includes the following areas:
