AFP Legal comprises professional legal and paralegal staff, who provide legal advice and assistance to all areas of core business for the AFP. The section is structured along functional lines, including dedicated lawyers in the areas of operational and information law, employment law and litigation, commercial law, counter-terrorism law and international deployments.
The Operational and Counter Terrorism groups provide operational legal advice on a variety of diverse and complex matters which reflect AFP's core business. The scope of AFP activities across jurisdictional borders, emerging crime types and counter terrorism also generate demand for legal advice in respect of matters beyond traditional policing priorities.
Employment and Litigation group manages claims and civil litigation against the AFP, legal assistance for AFP employees for litigation arising out of the course of their duties and provides advice on employment and industrial issues affecting the organisation.
The Commercial group provides advice on a variety of commercial matters, including the drafting of contracts and MOUs, procurement, intellectual property, leasing and other governance issues.
The International Deployment group provides advice on matters arising from deployments in connection with the International Deployment Group.
